Viet Nam - Haiphong Global Youth Tobacco Survey Summary
The Viet Nam - Haiphong GYTS surveyed students aged 13-15 in grades 8,9 and 10 in 2003 using a two-stage cluster sample design. Sampling involved selecting schools with probability proportional to enrollment size and then random selecting classes, with total participants being 793 students. Response rates were high: 100% schools, 100% classes, and 94% students. key data includes prevalence of tobacco use, exposure to secondhand smoke, media influence, cessation attempts, and educational aspects.
Prevalence of Tobacco Use: 5.4% of students currently use any tobacco product, with boys (10.3%) higher than girls (1.3%); 4.7% smoke cigarettes, and 2.5% use other tobacco products (higher among boys). Overall, 15.0% had ever smoked cigarettes.
Attitudes and Beliefs: 86.2% considered smoking harmful to health, and 56.5% were exposed to secondhand smoke at home; widespread support for banning smoking in public places (77.9% agree it is harmful). Media exposure showed significant influence: 89.5% seen anti-smoking messages in the past 30 days, 63.0% seen pro-cigarette ads on billboards, and high engagement in discussions about smoking dangers (66.4% in school classes during the past year).
Key Determinants: 5.4% of students are current tobacco users, and 3 in 5 live in households where smoking occurs, highlighting high access and availability. Despite these factors, 85.4% have sought help to quit smoking, and media and school programs play a role.
