Survey Background
The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) was conducted in 2003 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, for students aged 13 to 15 years in grades 8-12 preparatory, focusing on vocational years 1 and 2. It used a two-stage cluster sampling method with a 979-student sample (82% response rate) to assess tobacco use prevalence and five determinants: access/availability and price, exposure to secondhand smoke, cessation, media and advertising, and school curriculum.
Prevalence of Tobacco Use
- Ever smoked cigarettes: 7.6% (boys 10.8%, girls 4.6%).
- Currently use any tobacco product: 7.9% (boys 9.9%, girls 4.9%).
- Currently smoke cigarettes: 1.9% (boys 2.5%, girls 0.7%).
- Currently use other tobacco products: 6.6% (boys 8.4%, girls 4.4%).
- Next year initiation likelihood: 12.0% among never smokers.
Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS)
- 14.9% live where others smoke at home.
- 41.2% exposed to smoking outside home.
- 95.7% believe smoking should be banned in public places.
- 51.3% recognize SHS as harmful.
- 8.8% have parents who smoke.
Knowledge and Attitudes
- Many believe smoking improves social life: 30.3% of boys and 24.6% of girls find it makes friends more.
- High support for tobacco control: 52.0% viewed anti-smoking media in 30 days.
- Most students (95.7%) support public smoking bans.
Media and Advertising
- 72.5% exposed to anti-smoking messages in 30 days.
- Pro-cigarette ads seen: 52.0% on billboards, 47.4% in newspapers/magazines.
- 12.6% own objects with cigarette brand logos.
School-Based Elements
- High awareness: 55.3% taught about tobacco effects in school.
- 23.9% discussed smoking reasons and societal implications in class.
This survey indicates high SHS exposure and varied tobacco use among youth, with some positive awareness but opportunities for improved prevention programs.
