The Viet Nam - Hochiminh Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) conducted in 2003 was a school-based survey targeting students aged 13-15 from grades 8, 9, and 10 in Vietnam's Hochiminh region. It utilized a two-stage cluster sampling design to gather representative data on tobacco use and associated determinants. The survey achieved high response rates, with 77.4% overall participation among 1,017 students. Key findings include a low prevalence of current tobacco use: 3.7% used any tobacco product, with cigarette smoking at 2.9%. Exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) was high, affecting approximately 64.7% of surveyed youth. Knowledge and attitudes showed that 89.1% endorsed smoking bans in public places, with 74.2% believing SHS is harmful. Media exposure was evident, with 92.2% seeing anti-tobacco messages and 70.0% encountering pro-cigarette advertisements in the past 30 days. School-based components, such as 66.4% of students receiving classroom tobacco education, were also prevalent.

The survey highlights that factors like parental smoking (9.5%) and peer influence (e.g., 3.4% having mostly or all smoking friends) significantly impact youth tobacco behaviors.
