Survey Design & Sample:
- School-based survey of 1,151 students ages 13-15 from grades 8-10 in Hanoi, conducted in 2003.
- Used a two-stage cluster sampling approach with high response rates (96.4% overall).

Key Findings:
- Tobacco Prevalence:
- 2.2% of students were current users of any tobacco product (3.2% male, 1.0% female).
- 1.2% reportedly smoked cigarettes currently (16.0% male, 4.9% female).
- 1.2% used other tobacco products currently (1.9% male, 0.5% female).
- Initiation Intent:
- 4.8% of never-smokers intended to start smoking.
- Secondhand Smoke (SHS):
- 57.7% lived in homes where others smoked.
- 82.8% believed secondhand smoke is harmful to them.
- 91.7% supported banning smoking in public places.
- 56.1% had parents who smoked.
- Media Exposure:
- 95.2% were exposed to anti-smoking media in the past 30 days.
- 75.5% saw pro-cigarette billboard ads.
- 55.7% saw pro-cigarette ads in print media in the past 30 days.
- 11.7% owned items with cigarette brands.
- School Education:
- 72.0% learned about smoking dangers in classes the previous year.
- 40.1% discussed smoking prevention topics in classes the previous year.
- Normalization of Smoking:
- 10.4% believed smoking makes boys have more friends.
- 6.1% believed smoking makes girls more attractive.
- 3.0% had all or most friends who smoked.
