Survey Overview: The Cook Islands Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) was conducted in 2003 with a two-stage cluster sample design. It targeted 604 students aged 13-15 years, with 100% school and class response rates and an 84.8% student response rate. The survey aimed to assess tobacco use prevalence and determinants for comprehensive tobacco control programs.

Tobacco Use Prevalence:
- 71.7% of students had ever smoked cigarettes (Boys: 69.6%, Girls: 73.5%).
- 45.1% currently use any tobacco product (Boys: 39.9%, Girls: 49.6%).
- 19.8% of never smokers are likely to initiate smoking in the next year.

Determinants of Tobacco Use:
- Access and Availability: 24.2% smoke at home, 13.6% buy cigarettes from stores.
- Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS): 57.6% live in homes with smoking, 73.0% are exposed in public places.
- Cessation: 95.2% want to stop, 79.0% have sought help, 85.9% tried to quit in the past year.
- Media and Advertising: 80.9% were exposed to anti-smoking media, 71.0% saw pro-cigarette ads in print, 26.0% have cigarette brand objects.
- School Factors: 56.1% were taught about smoking dangers, 54.8% about tobacco effects, 35.8% discussed tobacco use reasons.
