Senegal Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) 2002 Summary
The survey targeted students aged 13-15 in Senegal, using a two-stage cluster sampling design. With a response rate of 92.3%, 2,157 participants from 6th to 3rd secondary schools were involved.
Key findings:
- Tobacco Use Prevalence: 20.4% of students had ever smoked cigarettes, with boys significantly higher at 32.7% compared to 5.2% for girls. Current tobacco use was 16.6%, and current cigarette smoking was 13.2% (boys: 20.2%, girls: 4.4%).
- Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS): 45.8% lived in homes where others smoked, and 62.6% were exposed to smoke in public or other places. Attitudes were largely positive, with 89.5% believing SHS is harmful and 92% supporting public smoking bans.
- Access and Availability: Cigarettes were easily obtained, with 31.6% buying them from stores and few facing age-related refusals.
- Cessation and Media: 87.2% of smokers wanted to quit, and nearly 78% had tried to stop. Media exposure included 79.8% seeing anti-smoking messages and high rates of pro-tobacco ads.
- School Factors: 48.4% discussed tobacco dangers in school, but only 24.5% discussed smoking initiation reasons.
Highlights: High youth tobacco use, despite low cessation attempts, and widespread SHS exposure. Prevention programs could focus on access restrictions, media campaigns, and school education.
