Seychelles Global Youth Tobacco Survey Summary:

The survey, conducted in 2002 on 942 students aged 13-15, revealed high rates of tobacco use among youth. Lifetime cigarette smoking prevalence was 50.6%, with girls at 45.9% and boys at 55.7%. Current cigarette smoking was 26.8%, and overall tobacco product use was 28.9%. Data showed that prevention rates for starting smoking were low, with many students likely to initiate use. Exposure to secondhand smoke was high, affecting 43.3% in homes and over 60% in public spaces. Media influences included high anti-smoking message exposure but also pro-cigarette advertising. Youth attitudes often viewed smoking positively, with fewer than half believing it is harmful, and access to tobacco was common, with only a small fraction refused sales due to age. School-based components are part of the response, and cessation efforts were attempted by many.
