Senegal - Diourbal Global Youth Tobacco Survey Summary (2002)

1. Background

The Senegal-Diourbal Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS), conducted in 2002 among students in grades 6th through 3rd secondary and second, utilized a two-stage cluster sampling design. A total of 868 students aged 13-15 participated with a high overall response rate of 93.7%. The sample was selected with probability proportional to enrollment size at the first stage and systematic equal probability sampling of classes at the second stage.

2. Key Findings (Prevalence)

• Ever Smoked Cigarettes: 19.6% of students (males: 30.9%, females: 3.4%) had previously smoked cigarettes.
• Current Tobacco Use: 13.3% of students (males: 20.0%, females: 3.3%) used any tobacco product. This included:
  • Cigarettes: 11.1% (males: 18.2%, females: 1.1%)
  • Other tobacco products: 4.4% (males: 5.1%, females: 2.8%)
• Smoking Initiation: 15.9% of never-smokers indicated they were likely to initiate smoking in the following year.

3. Determinants and Attitudes

• Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS):

  • 43.6% lived in homes where others smoked while they were present.
  • 60.1% were exposed to smoke from others in places outside their home.
  • 17.7% had one or more parents who smoked.
  • 90% believed secondhand smoke is harmful.
  • 89.7% supported banning smoking in public places.

• Access & Availability:

  • 11.6% of current smokers typically smoked at home.
  • 28.7% acquired cigarettes through stores.

• Media Exposure:

  • 77% saw anti-smoking media messages in the past 30 days.
  • 63.6% viewed pro-cigarette advertisements on billboards.
  • 50.6% viewed pro-cigarette ads in newspapers or magazines.
  • 22.8% owned an object with a cigarette brand logo.

• Cessation Awareness: 82.7% of smokers intended to quit, and 76.3% had attempted to stop in the past year.

• School Curriculum: 47.3% of students received school lessons about the dangers of smoking in the past year. 35.7% learned about the effects of tobacco use. 19.1% discussed smoking reasons relevant to their age group in class.
