Methodology
The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) was conducted in 2002 among grades 8-11 students in South Africa. A two-stage cluster sampling design was used, with schools and classes selected proportionally to enrollment size. Response rates were 92.3% for schools, 95.9% for classes, 68.1% for students, and 60.3% overall. A total of 4,325 students aged 13-15 participated.
Prevalence
- 36.2% of students had ever smoked cigarettes (43.8% boys, 30.9% girls).
- 23.6% currently used any tobacco product (29.0% boys, 20.0% girls).
- 14.8% currently smoked cigarettes (21.0% boys, 10.6% girls).
- 13.1% currently used other tobacco products (14.8% boys, 11.9% girls).
Determinants and Attitudes
- Access/Availability: Limited refusal due to age in stores.
- Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS): 34.9% lived in homes where others smoked; 59.4% were exposed outside homes.
- Cessation: 66.6% wanted to stop smoking; 71.7% had tried to quit in the past year.
- Media and Advertising: High exposure to pro-cigarette ads (e.g., 72.2% saw billboard ads, 69.7% saw ads in media) but also anti-smoking messages (75.9% received).
- School Component: 44.0% learned about tobacco dangers, 30.3% discussed smoking reasons, 45.9% learned effects.
