Methodology
The survey used a two-stage cluster sampling design, achieving a 100% school and class response rate. A total of 1,007 students aged 13-15 participated across 2002, with an overall response rate of 87.3%.
Prevalence of Tobacco Use
- 32.7% had ever smoked cigarettes, with higher rates among boys than girls.
- 12.0% currently use any tobacco product, including 8.6% who smoke cigarettes and 5.3% using other tobacco forms.
- 10.0% of never smokers are likely to initiate smoking within a year.

Media, Advertising, and Access
- Media exposure: 68.7% see anti-smoking messages in the past 30 days; three-quarters (75.8%) see pro-cigarette ads through billboards/newspapers.
- Products with brand logos are common, and many students purchase cigarettes without age refusal issues.
School and Determinants
- School-based program: 53.6% learned about smoking dangers, 28.0% discussed reasons for smoking, and 43.6% learned about tobacco effects during the past year.
