Palestine STEPS Survey 2010-2011 Summary
This survey, conducted from April 2010 to March 2011, assessed chronic disease risk factors in Palestine among adults aged 15-64. A cluster sampling design was used, with 6,957 participants. The survey included three steps: Step 1 focused on socio-demographic and behavioral risks like tobacco use, fruit and vegetable consumption, and physical activity; Step 2 measured physical health indicators such as BMI, waist circumference, blood pressure; and Step 3 evaluated biochemical parameters including blood glucose and cholesterol levels.
Key findings across all ages include high prevalence of tobacco smoking, particularly among males; low fruit and vegetable intake, with most consuming fewer than five servings daily; insufficient physical activity, with over 46% reporting low activity levels; elevated BMI, with approximately 58% classified as overweight and 27% as obese; elevated blood pressure affecting 36% of adults; abnormal blood glucose and cholesterol levels in significant portions of the population. Further analysis showed age-specific variations, with higher rates of multiple risk factors in younger adults (15-44 years) and those aged 45-64 years.
The combined risk factors highlight widespread issues, indicating that a large proportion of the population faces multiple chronic disease risks, with males showing higher risk in several categories compared to females. These data provide a baseline for chronic disease surveillance and intervention in Palestine.
