Turkey GYTS Overview

• The Turkey Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) was conducted in 2003 in schools for students aged 13-15, using a two-stage cluster sampling design.
• The overall student response rate was 92.1% (11,441 participants).

Key Findings

• Prevalence: 26.3% of students had ever smoked cigarettes (76.3% males, 23.7% females), with 8.4% being current users and 6.9% reporting daily cigarette smoking. 30.7% of ever smokers initiated smoking before age ten.
• Initiation: 7.0% of never-smokers are projected to start smoking in the next year.
• Access & SHS Exposure:
  • High prevalence of SHS exposure: 81.6% live in homes where smoking occurs; 85.9% exposed in public places; Over 4 in 5 (86.4%) believe smoke should be banned in public; Nearly half (46.5%) think others smoking in stores influences their decision to smoke; Many (23.2%) usually smoke at home.
  • 59.8% have one or more parents who smoke; 5.4% have most/all friends who smoke.
• Current Smokers' Intentions:
  • 65.3% wish to quit; 61.4% have attempted cessation in the last year; 71.5% have received help to quit.
  • 13.1% report feeling compelled to smoke first thing in the morning.
• Media & Advertising:
  • High exposure to tobacco advertising: 57.0% saw anti-smoking messages vs. some (approx. 50.8%) saw pro-smoking TV ads; Similar patterns on billboards and in print; 10.1% owned items with cigarette logos.
• School Interventions:
  • 52.8% received classroom instruction on the dangers of smoking; 40.1% learned about the effects of tobacco use.
