Overview
The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) for Laos - Luang Prabang was a school-based survey conducted in 2003, focusing on students aged 13-15. It used a two-stage cluster sampling design with full enrollment-based probability selection for schools, random class selection, and high response rates: 100% school, 100% class, 91.9% student, and an overall 91.9% response rate. A total of 1,693 students participated.
Prevalence of Tobacco Use
- Ever smoked cigarettes: 4.7% (7.5% of boys, 1.2% of girls).
- Currently smoke cigarettes: 2.9% (4.7% of boys, 0.5% of girls).
- Currently use any tobacco product: 6.4% (8.8% of boys, 3.1% of girls), including other tobacco products.
Highlights and Key Findings
- Risk factors for next-year smoking initiation are 7.9% of never smokers.
- High exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS): 35.7% live in homes where others smoke, 45.5% are exposed outside homes; 42.4% have at least one parent who smokes.
- Attitudes: 58.5% believe smoking in public places should be banned; 55.9% think smoking from others is harmful. Only 2.2% have mostly friends who smoke.
- Media and advertising: 87.1% saw anti-smoking messages in the past 30 days, yet 52.3% and 55.5% saw pro-cigarette ads on billboards and in print media respectively.
- School-based determinants: 59.6% were taught about smoking dangers in the past year; 38.3% discussed anti-smoking reasons, and 54.5% learned tobacco effects.
Other Determinants
- Access/availability: Most students buy cigarettes easily.
- Cessation: 88.5% have received help to quit smoking.
- Education: School programs cover smoking risks, but more could be implemented.
