East Timor (Ages 13-15) GYTS Summary
Survey Design & Execution
- A school-based survey covering Grades 1-3 in East Timor in 2006.
- Employed a two-stage cluster sampling method, targeting all accessible students within selected classes from identified schools.
- High response rates were achieved: school (96.0%), class participation (100%), student (84.5%), overall (81.1%).
- A total of 899 students (aged 13-15) participated.
Key Findings: Prevalence
- Ever Smoked Cigarettes: 41.5% (Boys: 59.9%, Girls: 26.0%)
- Current Use of Any Tobacco Product: 41.0% (Boys: 54.5%, Girls: 29.8%)
- Current Cigarette Smoking: 32.4% (Boys: 50.6%, Girls: 17.3%)
- Current Use of Other Tobacco Products: 24.1% (Boys: 29.0%, Girls: 20.2%)
Key Findings: Risk Factors & Attitudes
- Initiation: 48.8% of never smokers expect to start smoking next year.
- SHS Exposure: Very high rate (63.2%) live in homes where others smoke. Additionally, 69.8% are exposed to smoking outside their homes, and 31.7% believe secondhand smoke is harmful.
- Parents & Friends: 67.7% have at least one parent who smokes, and 39.2% report that most or all of their friends smoke.
- Opinion on Bans: 39.9% believe smoking should be banned in public places, supported by 73.7% wanting to stop smoking and 67.7% calling for a ban.
- Cessation Desire: A high desire for cessation exists, with 73.6% having tried to stop in the past year, and 73.7% wanting to stop. Only 14.8% received help.
- Advertising: Students frequently saw pro-cigarette ads (billboards: 66.3%, print media: 66.3%) and anti-smoking messages (69.3%). Almost half (49.5%) had objects (logos) that were related to cigarette brands. Only 21.9% were offered free cigarettes by tobacco representatives.
- School: Approximately one-third (44.9%) received education in school classes about tobacco use effects, while 37.3% discussed the reasons why their age group smokes.
