Brazil - Curitiba Public Schools GYTS (Ages 13-15) Summary

Survey Methodology: Conducted in 2006 using a two-stage cluster sample design among 7th and 8th grade elementary, and 1st grade high school students. Response rates: School (100%), Class (100%), Student (90%). 1,416 students aged 13-15 participated.

Tobacco Use Prevalence:
- Ever smoked cigarettes: 45.3% (Boys: 37.6%, Girls: 51.6%).
- Current tobacco users: 18.4% (Boys: 15.7%, Girls: 20.3%).
- Current cigarette smokers: 15.5% (Boys: 11.6%, Girls: 18.6%).
- Current users of other tobacco products: 5.5%.
- Among never smokers, 20.3% plan to initiate smoking.

Key Determinants:
- Access/Availability: 77.8% of current smokers bought cigarettes without age refusal (31.4% purchased from stores). 40.8% lived in homes with smoke exposure.
- Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS): 70.3% believe SHS is harmful, 43.2% were exposed at home by others, 55.0% outside home. 85.2% support banning smoking in public places.
- Cessation: 66.7% of current smokers want to quit; 70.9% attempted to stop in the past year, 65.2% received help.
- Media/Advertising: 86.5% saw anti-smoking ads, 71.8% saw pro-cigarette billboards, 52.0% saw pro-cigarette ads in media. 5.3% had items with cigarette brand logos.
- School Curriculum: 43.2% were taught about smoking dangers, 24.2% discussed peer smoking, 40.8% learned about tobacco effects.

Additional Findings:
- 13.8% have most/all friends who smoke.
- Common misconceptions: 21.6% believe smoking increases friends (adjusted for gender), 17.6% think smokers look more attractive.
- Parent smoking prevalence: 40.8% have at least one parent who smokes.
