Eritrea Global Youth Tobacco Survey Summary
The survey focused on students aged 13-15 in Eritrea from 2006, using a two-stage cluster sampling design with high response rates. A total of 4,813 students participated.
Prevalence of tobacco use is low but notable. Among the highlights, 3.3% of students had ever smoked cigarettes, with higher rates among boys (4.3%) and lower among girls (1.4%). Currently, 6.6% use any tobacco product, with boys at 7.8% and girls at 4.6%. Specific prevalence includes 1.6% smoking cigarettes and 5.5% using other tobacco forms. Notably, 12.8% of never smokers plan to initiate smoking soon.
Exposure to secondhand smoke is common, with nearly 2 out of 10 students living in homes where others smoke, and over one-third exposed elsewhere. Attitudes show strong beliefs in the harms of smoking, with 84.6% of current smokers wanting to quit and high support for public smoking bans (57.9%). Media influences are present, with 68.6% exposed to anti-smoking messages and nearly half seeing pro-cigarette ads.
The survey included analysis of access/availability, cessation efforts, and educational aspects, such as 41.4% of students taught about smoking dangers in school and 26.8% discussing smoking reasons in class. The school response rate was 100%, contributing to the comprehensive data collection.
This survey provides a baseline for tobacco control programs in Eritrea, highlighting risks and protective factors among youth. Contact details for more information are provided in the original document.
