Tobacco Use Prevalence

Determinants of Tobacco Use

Access and Availability

• Easy access: 20.2% smoke at home; 62.3% buy cigarettes, with young people rarely denied due to age.

Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS)

• High exposure: As many as 39.5% live in homes where smoking occurs.
• Awareness: 47.6% believe SHS is harmful; 60.4% spend time with smokers outside home.
• Parent smoking: Over 31.7% have one or more parents who smoke.

Cessation Attempts

• High cessation desire: 80.4% want to quit, and 68.6% attempted to stop smoking in the past year.

Media and Advertising

• Media exposure: 72.9% saw anti-smoking messages; frequent pro-cigarette ads on billboards (64.4%), in print media (64.7%), and through free offers (14.2% received offers directly).

School-Based Factors

• Education components: 39.0% have learned about smoking dangers; 28.2% discussed peer smoking reasons.
