Overview
The 2007 Ghana (South) Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) focused on alcohol/drug use, sexual behaviors related to HIV/STIs/unintended pregnancy, unintentional injuries/violence, hygiene, dietary behaviors, overweight, obesity, physical activity, and protective factors. Implemented in grades JSS1, JSS2, and JSS3, it used a two-stage cluster sampling method. The school response rate was 100%, the student response rate was 92%, and a total of 1845 students participated. For this fact sheet, analyses are limited to 13-15 year old students whose responses were self-reported via computer.
Key Findings
Alcohol and Other Drug Use
- Ever drank alcohol: 22.0% of students, with higher rates for girls (23.9%) than boys (19.3%).
- Ever got really drunk: 20.8% of students, also higher for girls (22.6%) than boys (18.3%).
- Had negative consequences from drinking: 24.4% of students experienced issues like hangovers, fighting, or skipping school, ranging from 20.8% to 27.0% across groups.
- Used drugs: 14.5% of all students used drugs in their lifetime, with usage increasing slightly from boys (12.9%) to girls (15.3%).
Dietary Behaviors and Overweight
- Felt hungry due to lack of food: 16.7% of students, ranging from 16.4% boys to 16.7% girls.
- Overweight (WHO standard): 10.5% of students, with a significantly higher rate for girls (13.1%) compared to boys (7.8%).
- Obese (WHO standard): 1.4% of students, with similar rates across genders (1.1%, 1.6%, respectively).
Hygiene
- Insufficient tooth cleaning: 7.8% of students brushed/cleaned teeth less than once daily.
- Rare handwashing before eating: 4.0% of students rarely or never washed hands before eating.
- Rare handwashing after toilet use: 6.7% of students rarely or never washed hands after using the toilet, a similar rate for boys (8.3%) and girls (5.4%).
Physical Activity
- Met recommended 60 minutes daily: 16.3% of students met the guideline of at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day.
- High sitting time: 23.7% of students spent three or more hours per day sitting for activities like watching TV or playing games.
Protective Factors
- Unexcused school absence: 39.6% of students missed classes without permission.
- Low school kindness/helpfulness: 21.8% reported that most students were never or rarely kind or helpful at school.
- Lack of parental guidance on free time: 23.6% felt their parents or guardians did not know what they were doing during free time.
Sexual Behaviours (Relevant Ages)
- Past 12 months sexual activity: 16.7% of students were sexually active in the last year.
- Unprotected sex (last time): Among those sexually active in the past 12 months, about 44% used a condom last time (Note: data suppressed for * as fewer than 100 eligible students answered there).
- Sex with multiple partners: 13.2% of students reported having sexual intercourse with two or more partners during their lifetime, ranging widely by gender (9.5% girls, 16.6% boys).
Unintentional Injuries and Violence
- Physical attack in last 12 months: 50.2% of students reported being physically attacked at least once.
- Physical fights (last 12 months): 49.8% were involved in physical fights.
- Serious injury (last 12 months): 73.4% were seriously injured once or more in the last year.
- Bullying (past 30 days): 51.1% of students experienced bullying at least once in the last month.
