Myanmar Global School-based Student Health Survey Summary

Survey Purpose: The 2007 Myanmar Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) assessed various health-related behaviors and outcomes among students.

Target Population: Students in grades 8-11 in Myanmar, with a focus on those aged 13-15 years old for the analysis presented.

Methodology:
- Two-stage cluster sampling design.
- Schools selected proportionally to their enrollment size.
- Classes selected at random; all students in the selected classes were invited to participate.
- Sample included students aged 13-15 from eligible grades.
- School and student response rates were both 95% (school rate was 100%, student inclusion rate implied 95% overall).
- Total participants: 2,806.
- Students self-reported data using computer tables.

Key Survey Topics: Alcohol and other drug use, unintentional injuries and violence, hygiene practices, dietary behaviors and weight, mental health, physical activity, protective factors, tobacco use, and violence exposure at home.
Survey Results Overview (for students aged 13-15)
1. Alcohol and Other Drug Use
* Any alcohol consumption in the past 30 days: Low (Total: 0.8%, Boys: 1.1%, Girls: 0.5%).
* Ever really drunk from alcohol: Boys (2.6%), Girls (0.3%).
* Lifetime consequences from drinking: High failures among Boys (5.5%), significant among Total (4.4%), also reported by Girls (3.4%).
* Lifetime drug use: Very low (Total: 0.4%, Boys: 0.4%, Girls: 0.5%).
2. Dietary Behaviours and Overweight
* Went hungry due to lack of food: Some cases (Total: 2.7%, Boys: 2.3%, Girls: 2.9%).
* Overweight: Boys (4.0%), Girls (6.0%), Total (5.1%).
* Obesity: Low rates (Total: 0.7%, Boys: 0.6%, Girls: 0.7%).
3. Hygiene
* Insufficient daily teeth cleaning: Boys (5.8%), Girls (3.0%).
* Negligible handwashing before eating: Boys (4.8%), Girls (0.8%).
* Negligible handwashing after toilet use: Boys (4.9%), Girls (1.9%).
4. Mental Health
* Felt lonely (past 12 months): Low concern (Total, Boys, Girls ~3.8-3.9%). Feelings were slightly higher among Boys in self-rated school kindness.
* Considered suicide (past 12 months): Very low (Total: 0.7%, Boys: 0.8%, Girls: 0.7%).
* Had no close friends: Boys and Girls experienced similar rates (Boys: 3.9%, Girls: 3.1%).
5. Physical Activity
* Met daily physical activity guidelines (60 minutes daily): Low adherence (Total: 16%, Boys: 19%, Girls: 13%).
* Spent most leisure time sitting (>=3 hours/day): Boys spent more time (Total:10.5%, Boys:12.8%).
