Overview:
The 2007 Philippines Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) assessed health-related behaviors among high school students in grades 1-4, focusing on those aged 13-15 years. Data collection involved a two-stage cluster sampling method with high school response and student response rates of 97% and 83%, respectively.

-
Hygiene Habits:
- Dental Cleanliness: 1.6%–4.2% of students brushed teeth less than once daily.
- Handwashing Practices were common among both boys (3.3%-4.6%) and girls (2.1%-3.9%), but consistently lower than recommended.
-
Mental Health:
- Loneliness: 12.8%-20.8% of students felt lonely or had no close friends.
- Suicidal Ideation: 12.8%-19.9% seriously considered suicide in the past year, with higher rates among girls.
- Poor school climate and parental lack of awareness of free-time activities also affected students significantly.
-
Physical Activity & Screen Time:
- Only a small proportion (2.1%-3.7%) met guidelines for minimum daily exercise.
- High rates of sedentary behavior: 25%-32% of students spent three or more hours per day on screen-based activities.
-
Violence & Accidents:
- High exposure to physical attacks (33.9%-42.8%).
- Significant proportions reported injuries (45%) and bullying (47.9%) in the past year.
- Low percentage of students skipped classes without permission (30.4%).
These results highlight significant gender differences in substance use, mental health factors, and toxic environmental exposures among adolescents in the Philippines.
