The 2007 Cayman Islands Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) was a comprehensive school-based survey conducted on students in Years 8 to 12. The survey aimed to assess various health-related behaviors and factors, including alcohol and drug use, sexual behaviors, unintentional injuries and violence, hygiene, dietary habits, overweight, physical activity, tobacco use, mental health, and protective factors. The survey used a census approach to ensure data was representative of all students in the specified grades.

Alcohol and Other Drug Use

Total: 39.4% of students had at least one drink containing alcohol on one or more days during the past 30 days.
Boys: 41.4% had at least one alcoholic drink.
Girls: 36.9% had at least one alcoholic drink.
28.0% of students had drunk so much alcohol that they were really drunk one or more times in their lifetime.
20.2% of students experienced negative consequences from alcohol use, such as hangovers, sickness, trouble with family or friends, missing school, or getting into fights.

Dietary Behaviours and Overweight

4.8% of students went hungry most of the time or always due to insufficient food at home.
4.6% of students cleaned or brushed their teeth less than once per day.
12.1% of students never or rarely washed their hands before eating.
4.6% of students never or rarely washed their hands after using the toilet.

Mental Health

14.0% of students felt lonely most of the time or always over the past 12 months.
19.0% of students seriously considered attempting suicide in the past 12 months.
6.6% of students had no close friends.

Physical Activity

16.0% of students were physically active for at least 60 minutes per day on all 7 days.
57.0% of students spent three or more hours per day sitting and doing non-physical activities.

Protective Factors

16.4% of students missed classes or school without permission on one or more days in the past 30 days.
28.4% of students reported that most of their schoolmates were never or rarely kind and helpful.
30.6% of students felt their parents or guardians never or rarely knew what they were doing with their free time.

Sexual Behaviours

30.8% of students had ever had sexual intercourse.
22.3% of students had had sexual intercourse with two or more people in their lifetime.
Among students who had had sexual intercourse, 71.0% used a condom the last time.

Tobacco Use

10.9% of students smoked cigarettes on one or more days in the past 30 days.
6.0% of students used any tobacco products other than cigarettes.
53.2% of students were exposed to smoking in their presence on one or more days in the past 7 days.

Unintentional Injuries and Violence

36.9% of students were physically attacked one or more times in the past 12 months.
42.2% of students were involved in a physical fight.
50.2% of students were seriously injured one or more times.
26.1% of students were bullied on one or more days in the past 30 days.
