Mauritius GSHS 2007 Summary
The 2007 Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) in Mauritius assessed health behaviors among students aged 13-15 in Forms 2, 3, and 4. Using a two-stage cluster sampling design, the survey included 2,278 participants with high response rates. Health topics covered included alcohol and drug use, physical activity, tobacco use, unintentional injuries and violence, and protective factors.
Key findings from the survey include:
- Alcohol use: Approximately 18% of students consumed alcohol on at least one day in the past 30 days, with higher rates among boys.
- Drug use: About 5.2% reported lifetime drug use, with significant gender disparities.
- Physical activity: Only about 15% met the guideline of 60 minutes of daily activity.
- Violence and injuries: High proportions experienced physical attacks, fights, bullying, and injuries, with notable differences by gender.
- Tobacco use: Around 15% smoked cigarettes, and higher exposure to smoking was reported.
- Protective factors: Many students missed school without permission, and parental awareness of free-time activities was low.
The results highlight prevalent health risks among youth in Mauritius, emphasizing areas for intervention.
