Background

Determinants of Tobacco Use
- Attitudes: 74.8% of smokers wanted to quit, and 77.3% believed smoking harms others.
- SHS Exposure: High exposure—59.0% lived in homes where smoking occurred, and 71.3% were exposed elsewhere, close to 90% supporting public smoking bans.
- Friends and Parental Influence: 30.5% had most friends who smoked, and parental smoking was common (nearly 85% had at least one parent smoker).
- Initiation: 24.6% expected to smoke cigarettes in the next year.
- Access and Availability: High ease—51.6% bought cigarettes in stores without issue, and 63.4% had objects with cigarette logos.
Media, Advertising, and School Factors
- Media Ads: Predominantly pro-tobacco: 81.6% saw billboard ads, 86.3% saw ads in print media, with minimal anti-smoking exposure (68.3% of students saw at least some anti-smoking messages).
- School Curriculum: 56.6% discussed tobacco dangers in class, 41.6% covered reasons youth smoke, and 47.2% learned about tobacco effects.
