Summary of Global School-based Student Health Survey in Argentina (Mendoza) 2012 Fact Sheet
The 2012 Argentina Mendoza Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) focused on various health behaviors among 13-15-year-old students. A two-stage cluster sampling design was used, with a high school response rate (92%) and student response rate (82%), resulting in a total sample of 1118 participants.
Key findings include:
- Alcohol use: About 53% of students drank alcohol at least once in the past 30 days, with 76% having consumed alcohol by age 14.
- Dietary behaviors: 26% were overweight, 4% underweight, and 66% consumed carbonated soft drinks daily.
- Drug use: Among drug users, 55% first used drugs before age 14; 12.8% used marijuana in their lifetime.
- Hygiene: Fewer than 10% brushed teeth daily or washed hands often.
- Mental health: 15% seriously considered suicide; 8-17% had suicidal attempts or felt isolated.
- Physical activity: About 28% were active for 60+ minutes daily; 41% spent excessive time in sitting activities.
- Protective factors: 36% missed classes without permission; parents generally understood 53% of students' issues.
- Sexual behaviors: 34% had sexual intercourse, with 50% engaging in it before age 14; 82% used condoms during last intercourse when applicable.
- Tobacco use: 23% smoked cigarettes in the past 30 days, with 75% first smoking before age 14.
- Violence and unintentional injury: 32% experienced physical fights, 27% suffered serious injuries, and 22% were bullied.
