Survey Overview

The 2012 Global School-based Student Health Survey in Argentina (Rio Negro) focused on grades 8th EGB, 9th EGB, and 1st Pol. Key Findings for Ages 13-15 Years

Alcohol Use

• High prevalence of alcohol consumption: 58.6% of total students drank at least one alcoholic drink in the past 30 days. Among those who ever had alcohol, a significant portion (78.0%) began before age 14. Around 37.8% reported getting really drunk.

Dietary Behaviours

• Common consumption of carbonated soft drinks: Over half (57.2%) drank them one or more times daily.

Drug Use

• Marijuana use was reported by 18.3% of total students, with higher rates among boys. Some use began before age 14.

Hygiene

• Poor habits: Less than 5.0% cleaned teeth daily, and few washed hands after using the toilet.

Mental Health

• Serious mental health concerns: 19.9% considered suicide, and 16.6% attempted it in the past 12 months. Over 3.0% had no close friends.

Physical Activity

• Inadequate activity levels: Only 28.3% met guidelines for physical activity. Most spent over three hours a day on sitting activities.

Protective Factors

• Supportive parental involvement: 51.1% of students felt parents understood their worries, but truancy was common (34.3% missed classes without permission).

Sexual Behaviours

• High incidence of sexual intercourse: 41.0% reported ever having sex, with nearly 55.0% of those doing so before age 14. Condom use was reported in about 70.0% of recent intercourse.

Tobacco Use

• Substantial smoking rates: 27.4% smoked cigarettes in the past 30 days, with early initiation common among smokers.

Violence and Unintentional Injury

• Frequent issues: 30.5% involved in physical fights, and 32.7% suffered serious injuries in the past year. Bullying affected 21.9% during the prior 30 days.
