2012 Global School-based Student Health Survey: Argentina (Tierra del Fuego) Fact Sheet Summary
The 2012 Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, focused on assessing various health behaviors and factors among students in grades 8th EGB, 9th EGB, and 1st Pol. The survey used a two-stage cluster sampling design, with an 80% school response rate, 71% student response rate, and an overall response rate of 57%, involving 521 participants. For analysis, only data from students aged 13-15 years were included, as per the fact sheet.
Key findings revealed high rates of risk behaviors. Alcohol use was prevalent, with 47.2% of 13-15-year-olds reporting alcohol consumption in the past 30 days, and first alcohol use often occurring before age 14. Dietary habits showed frequent carbonated soft drink consumption. Drug use, particularly marijuana, was reported by 13.6% lifetime users. Hygiene practices were poor, with less than half brushing teeth daily and few washing hands after using the toilet. Mental health issues were significant, including suicidal ideation and attempts; 16.9% considered suicide, and 14.1% attempted it in the past year. Physical activity was low, with only 18.8% meeting the recommended 60 minutes per day. Sexual behaviors indicated early initiation in some cases, and tobacco use was common, with 31.6% smoking in the past 30 days. Violence and injury rates were also high, including physical fights and injuries. Protective factors, such as parental involvement, were less frequently reported. The survey highlighted substantial health risks among adolescents.
The report is based on self-reported student data and includes notes that certain data were unavailable. For further details, contact Dr. Jonatan Konfino.
