Global School-based Student Health Survey Summary
Objective: The 2012 Argentina (San Juan) Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) assessed health risks among 13-15 year old students covering topics like substance use, diet, mental health, physical activity, protective factors, and violence.
Methodology: The survey employed a two-stage cluster sampling design, achieving an overall response rate of 80%. Data was self-reported by students using computer-assisted methods, with 1210 students total, though only 13-15 year olds were analyzed for this fact sheet.
Key Findings:
-
Health Behaviors & Risk Factors:
- Alcohol Use: About 47% of students consumed alcohol in the last 30 days. Binge drinking occurred in approximately one quarter. Among those who ever drank (apart from a few sips), most (78-80%) first tried alcohol before turning 14.
- Dietary Behaviours: Roughly 3% were underweight, about one-third were overweight, and nearly 5% were obese. Almost two-thirds drank carbonated soft drinks daily.
- Drug Use: Lifetime marijuana use was reported by less than 10% of students. Information on first-time drug use age was limited.
- Hygiene: Nearly 8% did not brush teeth daily, and 4% never/washed hands after using the toilet.
- Mental Health: A significant minority had considered or attempted suicide (17-23%) or had few close friends (up to 10%).
- Physical Activity: Only about 28-34% met minimum guidelines for physical activity frequency and duration.
- Protective Factors: Limited information was available on parental understanding of students' lives and how they spent leisure time.
- Sexual Behaviour: Half had had sex by 15 years old, and over half who had sex did so before 14. Over three-quarters reported condom use last time sexually active.
- Tobacco Use: About 26-33% smoked cigarettes daily. Among smokers, the first cigarette was typically tried before 14, and almost three-quarters saw others smoking around them.
-
Violence and Injury: Students frequently experienced physical fights (34-44%), were injured (34%), and were bullied (27-33%).
