Monthly Oil & Gas Data Review Summary for October 2024
The following summarizes key findings from the JODI oil and gas databases update as of August 2024.
Oil Overview
- Demand: Petroleum demand rose by 1.48 million barrels per day (mb/d) month-on-month (m/m) in August 2024, driven primarily by gasoline demand growth, and increased by 1.28 mb/d year-on-year (y/y). However, diesel, jet fuel, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) demand declined m/m by 362 thousand barrels per day (kb/d), 136 kb/d, and 72 kb/d respectively.
- Production: Crude oil production increased slightly by 5 kb/d m/m and by 637 kb/d y/y. Key increases were from Canada (290 kb/d), the US (278 kb/d), and Saudi Arabia (51 kb/d m/m and 74 kb/d y/y).
- Inventories: Crude inventories decreased by 0.51 million barrels (mb), settling 231 mb below the 5-year average, while product inventories rose by 30.9 mb m/m.
Gas Overview
- Demand: Natural gas demand declined by 0.15 billion cubic meters (bcm) m/m to set at 149.2 bcm for JODI reporting countries, with a y/y increase of 2.3 bcm. European Union (EU) and UK demand fell by 0.7 bcm m/m.
- Production: Production decreased by 0.9 bcm m/m but increased by 1.4 bcm y/y, notably driven by Nigeria, Norway, and Qatar.
- Inventories: Total gas inventories surged by 11.9 bcm m/m, reaching a new high of 242.8 bcm. EU+UK inventories increased by 8.7 bcm m/m.
Highlight Notes
- Oil demand growth continued, supported by gasoline, contrasting with declines in other fuel types.
- Gas production exceeded year-on-year gains despite monthly losses; inventories for gas reached historic highs.
