Dominican Republic Global Youth Tobacco Survey Summary
The survey examined tobacco use and determinants among 13-15-year-old students in Dominican Republic. It aimed to assess factors such as access/availability, exposure to secondhand smoke, cessation attempts, media influence, and educational programs. The study used a two-stage cluster sample design from schools in 2004, with high response rates ensuring representativeness.
Key findings include:
- High prevalence of tobacco use: 21.4% of students had ever smoked cigarettes, and 6.6% were current smokers. Overall, 14.9% used some tobacco product, with higher rates among males.
- Knowledge and attitudes: Most students (71.0%) thought secondhand smoke was harmful, and 85.8% supported banning smoking in public places. Media exposure was significant, with high exposure to both anti-smoking (78.7%) and pro-cigarette ads (80.3% on billboards).
- Determinants: Nearly one-third (33.1%) lived in homes with smoking others, and existing smokers had strong cessation desires (55.1% tried to quit last year). SHS exposure was common, with effects noted.
- School-based factors: The majority (56.1%) were taught about tobacco dangers in school, with students showing awareness.
These results highlight areas where Dominican Republic could enhance tobacco control programs, focusing on prevention and education.
