Overview
The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) in Somalia-Somaliland focused on tobacco use prevalence and determinants among ages 13-15. Data was collected using a two-stage cluster sample design with high response rates (school 88.0%, student 94.2%, overall 82.9%). A total of 374 students participated.
Prevalence
- 28.3% of students had ever smoked cigarettes.
- 26.8% currently use any tobacco product.
- 18.6% smoke cigarettes.
- 18.7% use other tobacco products.
- 25.0% of never smokers are likely to initiate smoking next year.
Determinants of Tobacco Use
Access and Availability
- 19.0% usually smoke at home.
- 38.4% buy cigarettes in stores.
- Over half (56.9%) live in homes where others smoke.
- 28.4% believe secondhand smoke (SHS) is harmful to them.
Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS)
- 56.9% are exposed to SHS at home.
- 63.9% are exposed outside the home.
- 80.0% support banning smoking in public places.
Knowledge and Attitudes
- 48.8% think smoking helps boys make friends.
- Only 8.8% believe SHS is harmful (this appears inconsistent with previous data; original said 28.4% think it's harmful, but this point might be misstated or require clarification from source).
- 48.8% have parents who smoke.
- 24.0% have most friends who smoke.
Media and Advertising
- 80.0% saw anti-smoking media messages in the past 30 days.
- 65.9% were exposed to pro-cigarette ads (including billboards and newspapers/magazines).
- 28.4% have seen cigarette brand logos on objects.
Cessation
- 92.8% have received help to stop smoking.
School Curriculum
- 44.7% were taught about smoking dangers in school.
- 53.4% learned about effects of tobacco use.
- 36.8% discussed reasons for smoking with peers.
