Mexico-Pachuca GYTS Summary for 13-15 Year Olds
Introduction
The Mexico-Pachuca Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) in 2008 was a school-based study targeting students aged 13-15 years. It employed a two-stage cluster sampling design with high response rates, involving 1264 participants from 43 schools, yielding an overall response rate of 82.0%.

Tobacco Use Prevalence:
- 50.3% of students had smoked cigarettes at least once.
- 24.4% currently use any tobacco product.
- 19.3% smoke cigarettes now.
- 10.2% use other tobacco products.
- 29.0% of never smokers are likely to start smoking in the next year.

Adolescent-Related Factors:
- Exposure to secondhand smoke is high, with 33.8% living in homes where others smoke.
- 51.0% are exposed to smoking outside the home.
- Attitudes show strong support for public smoking bans: 83.1% believe smoke is harmful, and nearly all support banning smoking in public places.
- Access to tobacco is relatively easy, with low refusal rates in stores (44.4% purchased cigarettes without issue), and 37.8% have one or more parents who smoke.
- Cessation efforts: 42.7% of current smokers want to quit, and most (54.8%) have attempted to stop; about two-thirds (68.5%) received help.

- High exposure to anti-smoking messages (88.9% saw them in the past 30 days) compared to pro-tobacco ads (82.6% from billboards).
