The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) in Zimbabwe-Harare, conducted in 2008, assessed tobacco use among 13-15 year olds using a school-based, two-stage cluster sampling design. With a response rate of 81.7% and 1,181 participants, the survey provided data on prevalence, determinants, and attitudes.
Key findings include:
- Tobacco Prevalence: 10.8% ever smoked cigarettes (higher among boys: 13.2% vs. girls: 8.1%); 12.0% currently use any tobacco product (boys: 14.9%, girls: 8.2%); 3.2% smoke cigarettes currently; 1 in 10 (9.6%) use other tobacco products; nearly one-third (30%) of never smokers are likely to initiate smoking next year.
- Secondhand Smoke Exposure: 20.9% live in homes with others smoking; 40.1% are exposed outside home; 72.4% believe smoking should be banned in public; 58.6% think SHS harmful.
- Parents/Siblings: 21.5% have one or more parents smokers; 5.5% have most/all friends who smoke.
- Media and Advertising: 70.0% saw anti-smoking messages in past 30 days; 66.2% saw pro-cigarette ads on billboards, 58.2% in media; 14.8% have cigarette brand objects; 8.8% offered free cigarettes.
- School Factors: 47.5% taught about smoking dangers; 31.9% discussed class why people smoke; 45.5% learned about tobacco effects.
