Myanmar Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) 2016 Summary
Objective and Method
The 2016 Myanmar GSHS was conducted to assess health behaviors and risk factors among school students aged 13-17 years, corresponding to grades 7-10. It employed a two-stage cluster sampling design with probability proportional to enrollment size. The survey included students self-reporting responses on a computer-scannable sheet, yielding a school response rate of 90%, student response rate of 95%, and overall response rate of 86%. A total of 2,838 students participated.
Survey Domains
The survey covered a range of health behaviors, including alcohol use, dietary habits, drug use, personal hygiene, mental health, physical activity, protective factors, tobacco exposure, violence, and unintentional injuries.
Key Findings
- Alcohol use: Alcohol consumption was low, with 3.9-9.3% of students reporting recent use, higher in males. Ever drinking while intoxicated was similar across age groups.
- Dietary behaviors: High rates of underweight and overweight among students, with no data for some indicators; excessive carbonated soft drink use was common.
- Drug use: Limited data available on drug use before age 14.
- Hygiene: Most students brushed teeth regularly, but few washed hands after using the toilet; handwashing rates varied by age.
- Mental health: Elevated percentages of students considering or attempting suicide, particularly in younger ages. Most students had close friends.
- Physical activity: Only about 10-11% met daily physical activity guidelines, though some participated in physical education classes.
- Protective factors: Many students skipped school without permission; parental understanding and supervision varied.
- Tobacco use: High exposure to smoking in the presence of students, affecting most age groups.
- Violence and unintentional injuries: Significant proportions reported physical fights, injuries, and bullying; rates were higher among males.
This summary provides an overview of the survey's methodology and key data, highlighting prevalent health issues among Myanmar's school-aged youth.
