Summary of Algeria - Oran GYTS 2007
Survey Overview
The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) conducted in Algeria's Oran region for ages 13-15 in 2007 employed a two-stage cluster sampling design. It achieved high response rates, including 100% school and class response, and a 95.9% student response rate, with 1,717 participants total. The survey gathered data on cigarette and other tobacco use prevalence and key determinants such as access/availability, price, exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS), cessation behaviors, media and advertising exposure, and school-based education.
Key Findings
The survey revealed significant tobacco use among youth, with high gender disparities. While girls show low prevalence, boys have higher rates in all tobacco-related behaviors. Alcohol and other substance use, if applicable, could be indicated as part of tobacco control efforts.
- Tobacco Prevalence: 16.6% of students ever smoked cigarettes, 11.6% currently used any tobacco product, 5.2% smoked cigarettes currently, and 7.8% used other tobacco products currently.
- SHS Exposure: Moderate levels were found, with 33.2% exposed at home and 47.5% exposed outside; most (86.5%) believe SHS is harmful, and over 70% support public smoking bans.
- Cessation Indicators: High desire and attempts to quit among current users, with 73.8% wanting to stop and 74.1% having tried in the past year, though few received assistance.
- Media Exposure: Students saw anti-smoking messages (72.7%), but also high levels of pro-cigarette advertising (68.3% on billboards, 59.0% in media). A minority (9.8%) had branded items.
- School-Based Factors: Smoking dangers and cessation reasons were discussed in class (72.6%), increasing student awareness and anti-smoking attitudes.
This data serves as a baseline for comprehensive tobacco control programs in Algeria - Oran, highlighting the need for interventions targeting access, media, and school education to reduce youth tobacco use.
