Mozambique-Maputo City Global Youth Tobacco Survey Summary
This fact sheet summarizes the 2007 Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) conducted among 13-15-year-old students in Mozambique's Maputo City. The survey used a two-stage cluster sampling design with a high response rate, representing data on tobacco use prevalence and factors influencing youth tobacco habits.
Key Findings:
- Tobacco Use Prevalence: Approximately 10% of students currently use any tobacco product; higher among boys. Overall, 27% had ever used tobacco, with 8.2% initiating use.
- Secondhand Smoke (SHS) Exposure: Many students are exposed to smoke outside the home and in public places; nearly 28% believe SHS is harmful, and policies to ban smoking in public are widely supported.
- Attitudes and Knowledge: Most students hold negative views on smoking; over 70% support banning smoking in public spaces, and awareness is evident through media exposure.
- Influencing Factors: Media advertising plays a role, with some students seeing pro-cigarette ads, but anti-smoking messages are also prominent. School-based education is evident in classroom discussions and teachings on tobacco effects.
