Overview:
The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) 2007 in Zambia's Chongwe and Luangwa regions surveyed students aged 13-15 years in grades 7, 8, and 9. It employed a two-stage cluster sampling design, with an overall response rate of 66.9% and involvement of 698 students.

Sample Design and Response:

• First stage: Schools selected proportionally to enrollment size.
• Second stage: Classes randomly selected; all eligible students participated.
• Response rates: School response rate 84.0%, class response rate 100%, student response rate 79.7%, overall response rate 66.9%.

Tobacco Use Prevalence:

• 21.5% had ever smoked cigarettes (Boys: 23.4%, Girls: 20.6%).
• 28.5% currently use any tobacco product (Boys: 28.7%, Girls: 27.7%).
• Breakdown among current users: 12.1% smoke cigarettes, 23.7% use other tobacco products.

Future Initiation:

• 21.4% of never smokers are likely to initiate smoking in the next year.

Key Determinants:

• Secondhand Smoke (SHS): 25.2% live in homes with others smoking; 44.1% exposed outside home; 46.1% believe smoking should be banned in public places; 78.9% think smoke is harmful.
• Access and Availability: 9.0% buy cigarettes from stores; 32.5% live in smoking homes.
• Cessation: 94.8% have received help to quit smoking.
• Media and Advertising: 71.2% saw anti-smoking messages; 48.8% saw pro-cigarette billboard ads; 50.2% saw pro-cigarette ads in print media; 14.5% have objects with cigarette logos; 17.0% offered free cigarettes.
• School Factors: 57.7% taught about smoking dangers; 42.3% discussed reasons for youth smoking; 54.3% taught effects of tobacco use.
