Summary of Algeria - Setif Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) Fact Sheet
The Algeria - Setif Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) was conducted in 2007 to assess tobacco use among adolescents aged 13-15. The survey employed a two-stage cluster sampling design, selecting schools proportionally to enrollment size, followed by random selection of classes. A total of 1,581 students participated, with response rates of 100% for schools, 100% for classes, and 96.2% for students.
Key findings on prevalence show that 22.6% of students had ever smoked cigarettes, with higher rates among boys (43.2%) and lower among girls (6.4%). Current use of any tobacco product was reported by 15.7% of students (boys: 26.7%, girls: 6.8%), including cigarette smoking by 9.7% and use of other tobacco products by 8.9%. Additionally, 13.2% of never smokers indicated intent to initiate smoking within the next year.
On determinants, exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) is high: 40.6% live in households where others smoke, and 56.5% are exposed outside the home. Knowledge and attitudes reveal that most students (91.0%) believe smoking should be banned in public places, and 88.2% think tobacco smoke is harmful. Factors such as media influences include high exposure to pro-tobacco ads and anti-smoking messages, and school-based education was common, with most students receiving instruction on smoking dangers.
Morbidity indicators show that among current smokers, 86.7% expressed a desire to stop, and 75.1% had attempted cessation in the past year, with 90.0% receiving help to quit.
This survey highlights the need for comprehensive tobacco control interventions tailored to young people in Setif, Algeria.
