DRC Kinshasa STEPS 2005 Survey Summary
-
Objective: The survey assessed chronic disease risk factors among adults aged 15-64 years in Kinshasa, DRC, conducted from March to April 2005. It aimed to evaluate key risk factors like tobacco use, alcohol consumption, diet, physical activity, body mass index (BMI), and blood pressure (BP).
-
Method: A population-based, multi-stage cluster sampling design was used, involving 1,948 adults. Data collection included:
- Step 1: Sociodemographic and behavioral information, such as tobacco and alcohol use, fruit/vegetable consumption, and physical activity.
- Step 2: Physical measurements including height, weight (for BMI), waist circumference, and BP (including current medication use).
- Step 3: Biochemical measurements for blood glucose.
- All data were stratified by gender (males, females, and overall), with 95% confidence intervals (CI) provided.
-
Key Findings:
- Tobacco Use: 6.4% of adults smoked, with higher rates among males (14.1%) and lower among females (1.4%); average smoking start age was around 22 years, and most smoked manufactured cigarettes daily.
- Alcohol Consumption: 58.4% abstained; among drinkers, males showed higher binge drinking rates.
- Diet: Fruit and vegetable intake was low, with an average of fewer than 3 servings per day; 87-88% consumed less than 5 combined servings daily.
- Physical Activity: Only 22.5-36.1% met high activity levels (≥3000 MET-min/week); most had low activity (<600 MET-min/week).
- BMI and Weight: Overweight prevalence was high (BMI ≥25 kg/m²), especially among females and older adults (11.6-24.1%); obesity was less common (BMI ≥30 kg/m²).
- Blood Pressure: Hypertension was prevalent (17.1-19.9%), with higher rates in males, based on readings including medication use.
- Combined Risk Factors: Common risk combinations included smoking, low fruit/vegetable intake, overweight/obesity, and low activity or high BP; adults aged 25–64 years had 19.9-34.0% reporting three or more risk factors.
-
Key Notes: The survey covered overall chronic disease risk factors with age-stratified data; limitations include potential non-fasting status for biochemical tests. Contact Prof. Mbenza Longo for additional details.
