WHO FP Accelerator Plus Project Summary

The WHO FP Accelerator Plus project is focused on scaling up evidence-based family planning (FP) practices to support universal access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3.1, 3.7, and 5.6. The project involves collaboration between WHO headquarters, regional offices (AFRO, PAHO, SEARO, EMRO), country offices, and partners such as BMGF, USAID, UNFPA, ExpandNet, FP 2030, and JHPIEGO. The goal is to develop knowledge products, implement strategies, and improve technical assistance coordination to enhance FP services globally.

Main Topics and Activities

1. Scaling Up Evidence-Based Practices

• Focus areas: Post-pregnancy family planning (PPFP), task sharing among community health workers, social behavior change communication (SBCC), self-care interventions for SRHR, and emerging contraception.
• Key activities:
  • Review of systematic evidence on PPFP, task sharing, and SBCC.
  • Development of a work plan, Results Framework, and Results Tracker for scaling up FP practices.
  • Identification of approaches to support implementation and scale-up of evidence-based FP practices.

2. Country-Level Initiatives

• India:
  • Launched a National Dissemination Workshop for subdermal contraceptive implants (single rod).
  • Trained first group of trainers (gynaecologists and rural doctors) in Delhi.
  • Updated ASHA FP counselling booklet to include new FP methods.
  • Family planning self-care kits were introduced, containing pregnancy tests, condoms, and emergency contraception pills, with information aligned to WHO guidelines.
• Morocco:
  • Adapted the WHO self-care guide into the national SRH strategy.
  • Completed a pilot project on self-administered injectable contraceptives.
  • Ongoing discussions to scale up self-injection for contraceptive use.

3. South-South Learning Exchange (SSLE)

• Madagascar-Burkina Faso:
  • Conducted a study tour (18–20 April 2023) to share experiences on advocacy, governance, training, and scaling up self-administered DMPA SC.
  • Visited districts and health centres to gather insights from local stakeholders.
• Upcoming SSLE:
  • 20–25 May 2023: Study tour between Burkina Faso and Madagascar.
  • 30–31 May 2023: Partners meeting on the AYSRH Technical Assistance Coordination Mechanism (TAC).

4. Toolkits and Guidelines

• Family Planning and Comprehensive Abortion Care Toolkit:
  • Released in English, Spanish, and French.
  • Volume 1: Focuses on competencies for the primary healthcare workforce.
  • Volume 2: Focuses on programme and curriculum development.
• WHO SMART Guidelines - Digital Adaptation Kits (DAK):
  • Implemented in Zambia to digitize the HMIS and align FP reporting tools.
  • A four-day workshop was held in Kabwe to update national FP cards and registers.
  • The DAK will be adapted and rolled out countrywide.

5. Family Planning Global Handbook for Providers 2022

• Launched at the International Conference on Family Planning (ICFP) in 2022.
• New chapters:
  • Family Planning for Women at High Risk of HIV
  • Providing Family Planning Services During an Epidemic
• New sections:
  • Gender equality and inclusiveness
  • Self-injection as an option for DMPA-SC
  • STI signs and symptoms
  • Screening and treatment for cervical cancer

6. Scientific Writing, Mentoring and Coaching Workshop

• Follow-up to the ICFP 2022 Scientific Writing course.
• 6-month coaching for participants (21 November – 20 May 2023).
• Webinars held on 2 February and 13 April 2023.
• Outcomes: 4 out of 43 participants completed manuscripts for publication.

Key Partners and Collaborations

• ExpandNet: A 20-year-old global network supporting FP scale-up. Collaborated with WHO during the FP Accelerator Plus meetings.
• UNFPA, BMGF, USAID, JHPIEGO, and FP 2030: Key partners in the project.
• WHO HRP: Celebrated its 50th anniversary, highlighting its role in advancing SRHR across the life-course.
