WHO FP Accelerator Plus Project Newsletter Summary (Issue 6, August 2024)

Project Overview: The WHO FP Accelerator Plus project supports partners and Ministries of Health (MoH) in accelerating the scaling up and sustaining of evidence-based family planning practices, guided by WHO recommendations, contributing to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) targets 3.1, 3.7, and 5.6, as well as Universal Health Coverage goals.

Key Activities:

• Bottleneck Analysis (BNA) in Four Regions: 27 countries conducted standardized BNA to develop national plans. Focus areas include post-pregnancy family planning (PPFP), social and behavior change (SBC), and task sharing.
  • Eastern Mediterranean (e.g., Pakistan): Completed data collection and analysis; preliminary BNA findings shared at a June 2024 meeting; consensus-building workshop planned for August 5-9 to review bottlenecks and solutions.
  • African Region (e.g., Kenya, Ethiopia): Ongoing BNA; Kenya has requested comprehensive analysis including counties with varying indicators; Ethiopia completed data collection and analysis began, with a workshop scheduled for August 12-17.
  • South-East Asia (e.g., Nepal): Completed data collection; consensus-building workshop for August 9-10 to prioritize bottlenecks and strategies for PPFP and SBC.
• Digital Health Initiatives: Partnership with WHO/HRP and others launched the SMART Guidelines-Digital Adaptation Kit (DAK) for family planning in Pakistan, with a multi-stakeholder team established for adaptation.
• Emerging Contraceptives and Other Discussions: Scoping meeting in Geneva aimed to recommend new contraceptives for inclusion in WHO guidelines; virtual consultation on post-pregnancy FP scaling up involved over 260 participants.
• Regional Collaborations: FP2030 Asia Pacific Hub meeting discussed BNA findings; Regional Advisors meeting focused on life course approaches and collaborative work.

Recent Publications: Available studies include a mixed-methods study on contraceptive counseling in Pakistan and Nigeria, a systematic review on mental health and contraceptive use, and a review of WHO's role in male contraceptive development.

Upcoming Events:

• August workshops for BNA consensus-building in Pakistan and Nepal.
• August technical meeting in Geneva on social behavior change strategies.
• September convening in Geneva to scale up gender-responsive post-pregnancy FP strategies.
