Project Overview
- Continues work of previous WHO Family Planning projects to support partners in implementing evidence-based, gender-responsive interventions and accelerating uptake/sustainability of WHO-recommended practices.
- Contributes to SDG targets (3.1, 3.7, 5.6) and WHO's UHC goal (13th Global Programme of Work).
- Coordinated by WHO Department of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Research (SRH).
- Focuses on 14 priority countries (Pakistan, Nepal, Uganda, etc.).
1Country News
- South-South Learning Exchange (SSLE):
- Madagascar-Burkina Faso: Learnt about community-based DMPA uptake strategies; feedback gathered on implementation.
- Nepal-Sri Lanka: Nepal scaled up post-partum family planning (PPFP) services at Civil Services Hospital. Training provided, policies updated, and a service monitoring system implemented; FP services expanded to five temporary methods.
- AYSRHR Technical Assistance Coordination (TAC) Mechanism: Review meeting discussed lessons, challenges, and recommendations for improvement.
- WHO Guidelines: Finalizing guidelines to prevent early pregnancy/outcomes in LMICs, focusing on child marriage, contraception access. Fourth GDG meeting planned for Aug 2023.
- Online Training & Resources:
- ASRH Course: 324 French-speaking learners enrolled in a course for African public health professionals.
- Postpartum Family Planning Course: New blended learning course (Aug 2023) focusing on essential counseling.
- FP Community-Based Interventions: Documentation supports scaling up long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) postpartum/post-abortion.
2Office Orchestra
- Bottleneck Analysis (BNA):
- A protocol to understand barriers/enablers to scaling up evidence-based practices (PPFP, PAFP, SBC, task-sharing).
- Being implemented/discussed in Pakistan, Nigeria, Indonesia, Uganda, Ethiopia.
- WHO protocol reviewed in a consultation by IBP network, receiving positive feedback.
- White Paper Initiative: Consultations on revitalizing/scaling PPFP/PAFP within UHC led to a planned White Paper.
- FP 2030 Steering Committee: Updates on BNA, UHC consultation, and quality work shared at virtual meeting.
Partners Meeting
- India: Partners met to discuss collaboration on BNA implementation and use of tools in the national context.
Publications & Activities
- Advocacy Briefs & Case Studies: Documenting leadership (e.g., SRH Outbreak Working Group), pharmacy access, and SSLE between countries.
- Research Highlights: Systematic review on scaling post-pregnancy FP strategies, scoping review on SSLE approaches.
