报告摘要
The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) for Laos – Vientiane Province provides data on tobacco use among 13- to 15-year-olds, with a sample of 1591 students surveyed in 2003 using a two-stage cluster design. A high response rate (>94.9%) ensured representative data.
Key findings show that 12.9% had smoked cigarettes at least once, and 12.8% currently used any tobacco product. Among current users, 9.4% smoked cigarettes, and 5.9% used other forms; boys had higher use than girls.
Determinants highlight high exposure to secondhand smoke (over 57% exposed outside home, with 53% having smoking parents), misconceptions about smoking attractiveness (more friends look/smoke), and beliefs that smoking should be banned in public places (54.7% agree it is harmful). Youth attitudes indicate strong cessation intent: 94.5% want to stop, 91.0% have tried, and 87.1% sought help. Media influences include seeing anti-smoking messages (90.6%) but pro-cigarette ads (53.4% on billboards, 58.2% in print) and instances of free cigarette offers (9.6%).
School-based education covered smoking dangers (61.5% taught about risks) and reasons for youth smoking (40.8% discussed).
The survey underscores high youth tobacco initiation, widespread SHS exposure, and a desire to quit, suggesting targeted tobacco control programs.
