Honduras - Tegucigalpa GYTS Summary

The Global Youth Tobacco Survey in Honduras - Tegucigalpa, conducted in 2003 on students aged 13-15 in grades 7, 8, and 9, used a two-stage cluster sampling method with high response rates. A total of 1,119 students participated. The survey revealed high prevalence of tobacco use, with 46.3% having ever smoked cigarettes and 20.4% currently using any tobacco product, including 14.2% who smoke cigarettes regularly and 9.9% using other forms. Key findings also include exposure to secondhand smoke (33.0% of students live in homes where others smoke), strong attitudes against tobacco use, and influences from media and school programs.

Current cigarette smokers (14.2%) and other tobacco users (9.9%) were prevalent, with 60.6% of youth expressing a desire to quit. Media exposure showed high rates of pro-cigarette advertising (83.4% saw billboard ads, 74.6% saw newspaper ads), while anti-smoking messages reached 12.8% of students in the past 30 days. School-based interventions included teaching about tobacco dangers (61.6%) and discussing smoking reasons (32.5%). High SHS exposure and low cessation help further highlight the need for comprehensive tobacco control efforts.
