The 2004 Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) in Brazil-Espirito Santo Vitoria is a school-based survey assessing tobacco use prevalence and determinants among ages 13-15. It used a two-stage cluster sampling design with high response rates: 100% school and class response, and 83.5% student participation, involving 873 students. Key findings include:
-
Prevalence: 29.2% of students had ever smoked cigarettes, and 13.1% currently used any tobacco product. Current cigarette use was 8.2%, with 6.7% using other tobacco forms. Among never smokers, 17.5% are likely to initiate smoking.
-
Determinants:
- Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS): High exposure; 6.9% lived in homes where others smoked, and over 25% were exposed outside homes. 30.9% had parents who smoked.
- Attitudes and Knowledge: 86.8% believe smoking should be banned in public places, and 88.1% have seen anti-smoking media. However, 73.4% saw pro-cigarette ads. Most students (81.6%) received cessation help, and school-based education covered smoking dangers.
- Access and Availability: 20.9% smoked at home, and 42.4% easily bought cigarettes; 8.3% had items with cigarette brand logos.
- Initiation Risk: Factors like friends smoking influence future use, with attitudes mixed on attractiveness.
