Summary of 2007 Global School-based Student Health Survey in Philippines (Visayas)

The 2007 survey assessed health behaviors and factors among high school students aged 13-15 in the Philippines Visayas region. It employed a two-stage cluster sampling design with a 100% school response rate and an 85% overall student response rate, involving 2,009 participants. Key areas measured included alcohol and drug use, unintentional injuries and violence, hygiene, dietary behaviors and overweight, physical activity, mental health, and protective factors.

Key Findings

Alcohol and Drug Use: Boys had higher rates of alcohol consumption and drunkenness compared to girls, with around 15% reporting alcohol use in the past 30 days for the total sample.
Dietary Behaviours and Overweight: About 8-11% of students experienced hunger due to insufficient food at home, and higher rates of overweight (11-16%) and obesity (3-5%) were noted, with boys more affected by obesity.
Hygiene: Students reported poor dental and handwashing habits; only a minority cleaned teeth adequately or washed hands frequently before and after using the toilet.
Mental Health: Loneliness, suicidal considerations (15-18%), and lack of close friends were prevalent, with girls showing higher instances of loneliness and suicidal thoughts.
Physical Activity: Most students did not meet recommended physical activity levels, with high sedentary behavior (up to 28% spending over three hours per day in sitting activities).
Protective Factors: Absenteeism without permission was common, school kindness decreased over time, and parents showed low monitoring of students' free time.
Tobacco Use: Smoking cigarettes was higher among boys, with nearly 9% smoking during the past 30 days, and tobacco use not limited to cigarettes was less common.
Unintentional Injuries and Violence: Students frequently reported physical attacks, fights, and bullying, with bullying affecting over half the sample during the past 30 days.
