Summary of 2007 Global School-based Student Health Survey in St. Lucia
This fact sheet details a school-based health survey conducted in 2007 in Saint Lucia, focusing on health behaviors and risk factors among students aged 13-15 years. The survey aimed to measure various aspects, including alcohol and drug use, sexual behaviors, hygiene, mental health, physical activity, tobacco use, unintentional injuries, and protective factors, to assess health risks and provide data for policy improvement.
The study employed a two-stage cluster sampling design. Schools were selected with probability proportional to enrollment size, and random classes were chosen, with all eligible students participating. The school response rate was 100%, the student response rate was 82%, and the overall response rate was 82%. A total of 1276 students were surveyed, who self-reported responses on computer-scannable sheets.
Key findings for students aged 13-15 include:
- Alcohol and Drug Use: High rates of alcohol consumption (55.4%) and lifetime drug use (22.0%), with variations by gender.
- Dietary and Hygiene Behaviors: Some students reported food insecurity or poor hygiene practices, affecting nutritional health.
- Mental Health: Notable levels of loneliness and suicidal ideation were observed.
- Physical Activity: Low rates of daily physical activity and high screen time were identified.
- Protective Factors: Issues such as truancy, lack of school kindness, and parental disconnect were prevalent.
- Sexual Behaviors: A significant portion engaged in sexual activity, with incomplete condom use reported.
- Tobacco Use: Moderate smoking prevalence, with some exposure in personal spaces.
- Injuries and Violence: High incidence of physical attacks, fights, and injuries.
These results highlight key public health concerns and emphasize the need for targeted interventions. For further details, contact the Ministry of Health in St. Lucia.
