Summary of the CAFI Study on Small and Micro Business Financial Health
Overview
The study addresses the challenges faced by small and micro enterprises (SM enterprises) in China against a complex economic environment. SM enterprises contribute to approximately 80% of urban employment and face significant difficulties in financial management due to limited resources, incomplete accounting systems, and high levels of debt. Financial health, defined as the ability to maintain daily financial operations, withstand risks, and prepare for future growth, is introduced as a key concept, closely related to equitable finance quality improvement, which aligns with policy documents and regulatory attention.
Methodology
- Definition and Index: Based on the theory that financial health reflects a enterprise's operational efficiency, immunity, and growth potential, defined using three sub- dimensions: daily financial management, risk防范, and capital筹措. A financial health index was constructed using factor analysis on survey responses, with variables standardized from questionnaires covering eighteen aspects. The index was generated through regression estimation after confirming suitability with KMO and Bartlett's areyly tests.

- Financial HealthStatus: Of the 4,000+ sampled enterprises, 33.97% were classified as unhealthy, potentially impacting 180 million people's employment. Among 24% of samples, 56.6% were extremely unhealthy and 28.3% unhealthy.
