Summary of Nigeria-Cross River State Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS, 2008)
- Conducted in 2008 among 349 students aged 13-15 in Cross River State.
- Two-stage cluster sampling design, with near-perfect school and class response rates (100% and 96.0%, respectively).
- Tobacco Use: 13.39% of surveyed youth had ever smoked cigarettes; 26.06% currently used any tobacco product; 4.05% currently smoked cigarettes; 23.获得了学习关于烟草危害的信息。

- Secondhand Smoke (SHS) Exposure: 31.27%, one or more parents were smokers; Approximately 31.3% lived in homes where smoking occurred in their presence; 46.9% reported being exposed to others smoking outside their homes.
- Attitudes & Beliefs: Over 70% (70.8%) believed SHS is harmful and should be banned from public places. Perception about attractiveness differed significantly by gender (47.4% thought boys looked more attractive smoking, 32.9% girls). Around half of students (45.9%) saw anti-smoking messages in media but nearly equal numbers (53.7%) saw pro-tobacco billboards, particularly cigarette advertising in print media (53.7%) dominated.
- Media & Advertising: High exposure to both pro-tobacco media (especially print) and pro-smokers objects/signs. Exposure to anti-smoking campaigns was less common (66.5% recall seeing in past 30 days).
- Classroom Education: 52.1% received classroom instruction on tobacco dangers in schools recently.
- Key Conclusion: Significant tobacco use prevalence among youth (26%) coupled with substantial SHS exposure and mixed views on smoking attractiveness. Strengths in public awareness regarding health risks are noted (seems significant portion say smoking is harmful and should not be in public), but challenges include widespread pro-tobacco advertising exposure, social influences (friends/family), and potential barriers to quitting (price/access).
