报告摘要
Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) - Nigeria-Abuja (Ages 13-15) Summary
-
Background: The survey, conducted in 2008, included 580 students aged 13-15 from schools in Abuja using a two-stage cluster sampling design. Key determinants assessed included access/availability, price, secondhand smoke (SHS), cessation, media, and school curriculum. Response rates were high, with overall participation at 84.8%.
-
Tobacco Prevalence: 15.4% of students currently used any tobacco product; cigarette smoking was prevalent at 3.5% (higher among boys), and other tobacco use was at 13.9%. An additional 13.4% of never smokers indicated likelihood to start smoking in the next year.
-
Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS): High exposure rates were observed; 36.9% thought smoking made boys more popular, and attitudes included beliefs about health risks (e.g., 57% supported public smoking bans), but 5.8% had parents who smoked.
-
Media and Advertising: Students had high exposure to both anti-smoking messages (66.5% in the past 30 days) and pro-cigarette ads (43.1% on billboards, 46.4% in print media). Notable encounters included 11.3% offered free cigarettes and 16.1% seeing brand-logo objects.
-
School Factors: A large proportion (53.9%) received classroom education on smoking dangers, with 58.6% learning about tobacco effects, though specific discussions on age-related reasons were less common (30.0%).
