Kazakhstan Global Youth Tobacco Survey Summary
The Kazakhstan Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) focused on students aged 13-15 to assess tobacco use prevalence and key determinants. Conducted in 2003, it employed a two-stage cluster sampling design, with a total of 9,871 participants from grades 7 through 9, achieving an 89.4% overall response rate.
Key findings on tobacco use prevalence include a 31.4% lifetime smoking rate, 11.3% current use of any tobacco product, and 7.4% current cigarette smokers, with boys showing higher rates than girls. A notable early initiation pattern shows 45.2% initiating smoking before age ten, and 32.7% of never smokers planning to start next year.
Access and availability factors indicate 8.7% smoke at home and 62.9% purchase cigarettes from stores. Secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure is widespread, with 66.7% living in homes with smoking, 69.1% exposed externally, and high public exposure rates. Among current smokers, 75.5% want to quit, and 85.4% have sought help, with media messages showing a mix of anti-smoking content seen by most students.
School-based interventions were part of the survey, with 71.8% receiving education on smoking dangers. Media and advertising show a significant presence, with 23.1% having cigarette-brand objects, and high exposure to both anti- and pro-tobacco messages across various platforms.
This survey underscores the need for comprehensive tobacco control programs to address youth smoking rates in Kazakhstan. For more details, contact Dr. Tulebaev via email.
